How to improve my sense of smell.

We have little control over the things we can smell. However, the nose is highly trainable. An example of someone with an incredible sense of smell is Hellen Keller.

As many people know, Hellen Keller was both deaf and blind, this heightened her other senses unimaginably.

Hellen Keller could tell if someone next to her was a carpenter, an artist, a mason, or a chemist.

Inside our nostrils, there are olfactory neurons that capture odor molecules in the environment and translate them into electrical impulses so that the brain can interpret them.

The place in the brain where odors are received is called the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb transfers signal to areas of the brain that perceive odors, access memories, and remind us about people, places, or events that we associate with that smell.

There are a few things you can do to train your nose, and you should start right now.

1. Try smelling different things. Like our muscles when exercising, if we use them a lot, they will develop.

2. Linger in the smells. When smelling something, stay there a while, this will provide further information to your brain.

3. Train a lot. It takes years to become a sommelier or perfumer for example. But practicing can improve your ability. Research from the University of Dresden concluded that an average person can increase the size of their olfactory bulbs by testing four aromas, twice a day, for 30 seconds each.

4. Eat healthily. You may not believe it, but if you don't eat healthily, your sense of smell can suffer. Having a myriad of options of nutrients will give you the best sense of smell.

5. Don't smoke. Smoking ruins your sense of smell, this is no surprise, cigarettes have consistently been proven toxic in many levels.

If you follow these steps and practice, you'll train your sense of smell to the point where you can differentiate and pick odors from the environment.

How does your olfactory system work?

The knowledge of the olfactory system is quite recent, even though humans have wondered about it for centuries.

Each time we smell something, it involves teamwork between our nose and brain. There are thousands of tiny molecules floating in the air around us.

When those tiny molecules get into our nostrils, olfactory neurons in them make sense of them and send a message to the olfactory bulb in the brain, which distributes it to other regions of the brain.

So why do we have two nostrils? The answer is to track smells, just as dogs do, but their sense of smell is much more sensitive.

Each nostril allows our brain to detect small differences in the number of molecules that reach each one so that we can know from where it comes.

We love to eat, don't we? Well, that wouldn't be possible without the sense of smell, have you noticed that you can't taste anything when your nose is blocked?

Earlier, we mentioned the neurons inside our nostrils, we'll talk more about them.

Olfactory neurons talk to each other using electrical impulses, using their long cable-like connections to send those messages to the olfactory bulb, that distributes them to other parts of the brain.

These parts of the brain use the messages to do things like storing memories or provoking emotions, that is what happens when spontaneously old memories come back to us.

It doesn't matter how much we age; smells can take us as far back as to our childhood.

The olfactory system is similar and important to almost all animals (keep in mind, we are animals too) It helps them to find food, to recognize their family, and to avoid danger.

However, we perceive smells as flat, we smell individual things such as coffee or perfume, but we can't identify each component without proper training.

Some professionals can, with a lot of practice, identify individual components of smell, such as wine tasters or perfume makers. This is our olfactory system.

Tell your brand's story with Fridman's Fragrances

Humankind loves a great story. Storytelling has many applications in everyday life, from the entertainment industry to marketing. It is easier to sell a product or service when it has a story associated with it.

The reason why we like a story associated with our things is that it is easier to care about them and to create an emotional bond that persists in our brain.

When something persists in our brain, it is a memory. Memory is an important part of who we are. Memory is about learning information and retaining it so that we can use it later.

We learn information through our senses. Smell, touch, taste, hearing, and sight. Through diverse stimuli, we create a picture of the world around us in our brains. Four senses have an indirect connection to the brain, but the fifth goes directly into it, the sense of smell.

The sense of smell is closely linked with memory because it is rooted in the limbic system. This is why specific smells can bring memories, sometimes spontaneously. For example, I walk by a bakery and they're making apple pie, and suddenly a picture of my grandmother pops into my head because she used to bake the same dessert. That is how smell works with our memory.

In time we've learned to manipulate this relationship between memory and the sense of smell to the advantage of our brands. Olfactory marketing uses a smell, bonds it with a brand or service or product, and it implants them in the brain of their customers.

This is called scent marketing. The point of scent marketing is to create an experience at storefronts that customers will remember. They want to connect with their customers on a deeper level than they would be able to with visual stimulation.

One study found that when major retailers used scent marketing in their stores intent to purchase increased by 80 percent. Additionally, dispersing a nice smell in the room not only makes customers buy more, but it also encourages them to stay longer at the store.

Customers will associate a smell with a brand image and recall it when they smell it later. Scents can help create an experience associated with a brand and subtly influence a customer’s view of a brand.

Scent marketing is also used to convey quality, certain smells give a sense of opulence that high-end stores use to attract a specific audience.

Every brand has a story, and if it allows itself to be vulnerable and to connect with their customers, it will reflect on their sales. Scent marketing is an ideal tool to illustrate this story and provide a true customer experience and brand loyalty.

Factors to take into consideration to aromatize spaces.

Smell plays an essential role in the making of memories for the human being. Our noses connect directly to our hypothalamus, therefore stimuli acquired olfactory are instantaneous.

It is because of these physiological characteristics that smells are a significant component of environment creation. Environments are everywhere, from our home to the spaces where we hang out.

Environments are even something brands take advantage of to establish loyalty towards them and ensure the growth of their businesses. This led to the use of sensory marketing.

Sensory marketing uses the five senses to engulf users into a 360-degree experience in commercial spaces. Choosing the wrong scent is a big no as it can drive your customers away.

Some factors you must take into account when choosing scents for your environments are:
  • The taste of the owners of the brand.
  • Types of furniture and colors in the decoration.
  • The dimensions of your commercial space.
  • The activities performed in the space.
  • The predominant weather.
  • If there are going to be pets in the space.

When choosing a scent for office space there are two objectives to keep in mind, to convey a sense of cleanliness and to increase employee productivity, some fragrances such as sandalwood, eucalyptus or lemon increase it as much as 20%.

Hotels must find a balance between comfort and elegance, not as familiar as home but close, to keep people happy during their vacation and business trips. Hotels must inspire cleanliness. Beach hotels often use coconut to give the distinctive smell we get while on vacation, while urban hotels use pine or wood, which are fresh and elegant scents.

Gyms are also a space that benefits greatly from olfactory marketing. A lot of people exercising in a closed space can be a recipe for disaster in terms of smells, for this reason, you want to use fragrances associated with hygiene such as pine or peppermint to mask the odor of sweat.

Going to the bank can be so stressful because of the waiting and the managing of finances; this is why we can use a diffuser to spread a relaxing scent such as lavender.

Environment specialists can help you choose what suits your business best to achieve the best results.

12 scents to increase productivity.

Aromatherapy has a significant effect on cognitive functions. Our sense of smell connects directly to the hypothalamus, which is responsible for our emotions and memory making. Scents are so strong that they can evoke vivid memories we didn't know we had. Try a few examples, for instance, if I mention your grandmother's cookies, you will remember their smell, or what a dear family member smelled.

Aromatherapy can also help us work. Sometimes it is complicated to concentrate at work. Several things must happen at the same time to ensure we get the job done. We must have slept ok, the temperature at our office has to be comfortable, as well as what we're wearing, we must muffle the sound. Anyway, it's not easy to focus. But, how can we use aromatherapy to boost our focus and cognitive function? We'll talk about the scents that do just that.

Fragrance sensitivity.

Fragrance sensitivity is a condition that can be quite severe, and it involves having an allergic reaction to the natural or chemical components of aromas.

People can experience fragrance sensitivities in the form of respiratory ailments or skin conditions. Life can be difficult for people who experience these reactions since fragrances are everywhere.

Common symptoms of fragrance sensitivity include:

Headaches.
Nausea.
Skin Redness.
Skin itching and burning.
Watery, itchy eyes.
Sneezing.
Runny nose
Difficulty breathing.
Worsening of asthma symptoms.

There are several actions you can take to improve fragrance sensitivity. In some places, this condition is considered a disability and if an employee experiences severe symptoms they can demand their employer to scent-proof the office.

You can also visit your doctor to obtain treatment with antihistamines and nasal corticoids to relieve the symptoms.

If you experience skin symptoms consider steroid ointments and antihistamines, prescribed by a doctor, of course.

You can also purchase fragrance-free household products to reduce reactions. If a friend or coworker is the one with the allergies, be considerate and avoid wearing perfume or excessively smelly detergents.

It is difficult to limit exposure to fragrances but it is the only way in which one can reduce the allergic reactions that come with it.

If you have fragrance sensitivity don’t be afraid to speak up, tell your coworker that his cologne makes you sick or talk to human resources if the cleaning products used at the office trigger your reactions.

Remember that fragrance sensitivities can be severe and require medical attention in order to improve so that you can have a normal life.

The importance of your aroma diffuser is always clean

Diffusers have internal parts that can hold moisture and this is bad because it can cause a mold infection.

It is very serious to breathe mold, it can damage the lungs and cause chronic allergic reactions.

An essential oil diffuser must be clean at all times. As a general rule, you should always consult the manual for specific instructions by the manufacturer.

Following the instruction booklet is the best way to keep the warranty active.

Once the warranty is no longer valid you can find your preferred method to clean the diffuser, always making sure to clean it thoroughly to prevent health risks.

You must clean the diffuser regularly but if you don't and start noticing any of the following, it is important to fix it right away:

  • It diffuses poorly.
  • There is no mist anymore.
  • It makes noises.
  • Its usual noises become louder.

To clean the diffuser fill the tank halfway with water and add 10 to 20 drops of withe vinegar, then diffuse it for about 20 minutes.

Then use a q-tip soaked in vinegar to clean hard-to-reach places and rinse the entire mechanism with clean water.

Dry every part of your diffuser thoroughly, if necessary, leave it on the counter to drain overnight or until no water leaks from it.

Under no circumstances leave essential oil in water in the diffuser because it can be corrosive for the mechanism and damage it.

You can also affect the experience of new oils if there are leftover oils with a different scent that were left. A few other tips to keep your diffuser working at its best are to avoid placing it in direct sunlight or right next to a fan.

Unplug your device before you clean it and wipe the top down when it gets dusty. Take care of your diffuser and give it regular cleanings to maximize the benefit from your investment.

Correct maintenance of an essential oil diffuser

Now that you own an essential oil diffuser it is important to make take care of its maintenance to make sure it works properly throughout the years.

Although most essential oils have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, they can be corrosive to your machine if you leave them many days in the deposit.

Residues may build up even if you thoroughly dry the device and it will eventually stop working. The suggestion is to undergo a deep cleaning process each month.

The cleaning process of a diffuser is very simple. Each month fill the diffuser with water and add 10 drops of white vinegar into the tank, allow it to run for five minutes, drain the diffuser.

Grab a cotton swab dipped in white vinegar and gently clean those little hard to reach areas. Then rinse with clean water. Use a dry cloth to wipe down until dry.

This will keep your diffuser clean and ready to use. Keep in mind that you also need to perform a daily clean-up process, it involves unplugging the diffuser, discharging the water, then using a cloth wipe it with dish soap, this will soak up the grease.

Using a wet clean side, wipe out the soap. Give the diffuser a quick rinse. Then dry using another cloth.

The main recommendation is to read the manual to perform the cleaning according to the manufacturer's instructions.

It is not always possible to give your diffuser a deep cleaning, but try to do it as often as possible so that it will keep working.

It is important not to do anything forbidden by the enclosed warranty so that it can be exchanged if covered.

Let's take another look at the necessary steps to maintain an essential oil diffuser.

  1. Fill your diffuser about halfway with clean water. Make sure you stop well below the max line.
  2. Add up to 10 drops of pure white vinegar. This will help in removing the oils that are stuck inside the diffuser and on the glass or plastic pieces.
  3. Let the diffuser run for about 3-5 minutes to allow the water-vinegar mixture to disperse throughout the unit and clean it.
  4. Drain the diffuser completely.
  5. Using a cotton swab dipped in vinegar, clean the tight spots and corners of the diffuser to make sure that no spots are left dirty.
  6. Rinse with clean water.
  7. Empty again and it’s done.

¿What do I have to consider when choosing an essential oil diffuser?

Congratulations on using aromatherapy to improve your quality of life, it is the beginning of enduring well-being. But what sort of diffuser should you choose?

Choosing the right diffuser will help you to get the most out of aromatherapy. Having the wrong device will result in having to buy many of them; the right diffuser can work for many years.

There are several types of diffusers; we will discuss them so you can pick the right one.

Ultrasonic mist diffusers.

These are the most popular devices to administer aromatherapy. Ultrasonic mist diffusers have a deposit in which you put water and a few drops of essential oil and ultrasonic waves break the liquid into particles to disperse it. These diffusers are also stylish pieces of decoration.

Vaporizers.

These diffusers have a heat source and, as their name says, they evaporate the fragrance into the environment. However, heat may alter the chemical composition of the oils.

Portable diffusers.

These have the same mechanism as mist diffusers and they are chargeable via USB, they are practical because they allow you to use aromatherapy everywhere.

Nebulizer.

They do not use heat or water. They work by atomizing the essential oils into fine particles. They are the most powerful way to diffuse essential oil and the method that preserves the quality of the oils the best.

Nebulizers use a larger amount of essential oil for shorter running time. However, the concentration of essential oils released in the air is much stronger.

With this knowledge, you'll have the tools to choose the right diffuser to accommodate your space and help you get the most out of aromatherapy to improve your daily life.
